List of Benefits of CBD Oil

Cannabidiol oil (CBD) is a cannabis-derived product. It belongs to the family of cannabinoids, chemicals naturally found in marijuana plants. Although it comes from marijuana plants, CBD does not produce psychotic effects or other forms of intoxication, caused instead by another cannabinoid, THC.

There are still some controversies regarding cannabis products, such as CBD oil, due to the recreational uses of marijuana. However, there is growing awareness about the possible health benefits of CBD oil. Below you will find what you need to know about 6 potential uses of CBD in the medical field and the current state of research:
  1. Reduction of Anxiety

CBD may be able to help manage anxiety. The researchers believe it could alter the way the brain's receptors react to the mental health-related chemical serotonin. Receptors are small cell-bound proteins that receive chemical messages and help cells respond to different stimuli.

One study found that a 600 mg dose of CBD helped individuals with social anxiety to make a public speech. Previous animal studies have shown that CBD could help relieve anxiety through effects that include:
  • reduction of stress
  • decrease of the physiological effects of anxiety, such as an increase in heart rate
  • improvement of the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (DPTS)
  • induction of sleep in subjects suffering from insomnia
  1. Anti-Epileptic Effects

CBD has been mentioned in the past as a possible treatment for epilepsy. Research in this area is still in its infancy. At the moment, researchers are working on testing the amount of CBD needed to reduce the number of seizures and verify their safety. The American Society for Epilepsy claims that cannabidiol research represents hope for people with epileptic seizures, and that research is already underway to understand how to use it safely.

In 2016, a study was conducted on 214 people suffering from epilepsy. The study subjects added a daily oral dose of 2 to 5mg of CBD to the anti-epileptic drugs they were already taking. The researchers monitored the study subjects for 12 weeks, noting any unwanted side effects, as well as the frequency with which epileptic seizures occurred. Overall, there was a 36.5% drop in seizures in the study participants. Nonetheless, even serious negative effects were found in 12% of the subjects.
  1. Neuroprotective Effects

Researchers are studying a brain receptor to understand how CBD can help people with neurodegenerative diseases, disorders that cause gradual deterioration of the brain and nerves. This receptor is known as CB1.

Researchers are studying the use of CBD oil for the treatment of:
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson's disease
  • stroke
CBD oil could also help decrease inflammation which can induce worsening neurodegenerative symptoms. Further research will be needed to fully understand the effects of CBD oil on neurodegenerative disorders.
